Mobile Coupons have been steadily growing in popularity and it seems 2010 may just be the year they explode. This month retail giant Target will become the first retailer to accept mobile coupons at all of its store locations throughout the US.
Target customers can opt in to receive coupons by texting the keyword ‘COUPONS’ to SMS short code 827438 or alternatively online at Targets website. Customers who opt in receive texts on their cell phone with links to mobile coupons that can be redeemed in store.
Although Target is the first retailer to implement mobile coupons on a national scale they aren’t the first retailer to try the technology. Retailer JC Penny trialled mobile coupons at 16 retail locations in 2009. The coupons are great for retailers because they’re easy to create, quick to distribute and customers love the convenience of using money saving coupons straight from their cell phone.
It’s expected that an increasing number of retailers will follow Targets lead and try the technology in 2010. Surveys indicate strong growth ahead for mobile coupons with a recent Honeywell survey indicating many young adults are interested in trying out the new generation coupons, in particular younger, more affluent mobile users.
